Jesuits throughout the world prepare for their 35th General Congregration
In 2008 there will be General Congregation of Jesuits of Rome. Over the past few months, there has been preparatory meetings held by the various Jesuit Provinces throughout the world.
The British Province Congregation took place from December 28th January 1st at Loyola Hall, on the outskirts of Liverpool. Delegates elected former Provincial, Fr David Smolira, to accompany the current Provincial, Fr Michael Holman, in representing the Province.
The Jesuit General, Fr Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, has told the Society of Jesus that he intends to submit his resignation at GC35. If it is accepted, one of the delegrates will be elected his successor. Province Congregations - including the one in Britain - have been considering what qualities a new General would need.
Throughout the history of Society of Jesus there have only been 34 General Congregations. They can be called for a variety of reasons, including the election of a new General and to consider the government and priorities of the Society's work.
