Pray as you go
EXTENDED TO PENTECOST and beyond
In the last edition of Jesuits and Friends, we reported on the success of Jesuit Media Initiatives’ (JMI) Lenten daily prayer service, ‘pray-as-you-go’ which was produced in MP3 format. The trial, which began on Ash Wednesday, was envisaged as a low-key experiment for the season of Lent, in which people from Jesuit colleges, parishes and other centres in Britain would be able to help test out this concept and see if it had potential. But, as JMI’s director, Peter Scally SJ, commented,’ events have rather overtaken us.’
Word spread rapidly, with subsequent coverage on BBC Radio 4 and Radio 2, BBC News 24, the Daily Telegraph, The Irish News, the Washington Post, Vatican Radio, National Public Radio in the States, the free Metro newspaper for commuters and in several other places. By the beginning of Holy Week, 15,000 prayer sessions had been downloaded, and hundreds of messages had come in from people all over the world - of many denominations and faiths - requesting the site to continue. It was continued till Pentecost.
At present over 1,000 detailed ‘user questionnaires’, which were returned by people who used the service, are being analysed. Once this task has been completed, the feasibility of continuing pray-as-you-go in the longer term will be explored. However, during this time it’s still going and has been extended ‘indefinitely.’ You can download the MP3 files at www.pray-as-you-go.org Some User Comments:-
‘Been using pray-as-you-go for almost a month and it has really changed my life. I am constantly thinking of God as being present in my everyday life and in my surrounding. Thank you.’ Brian, USA
‘I do love this site every much. It really helps me to be nearer God and to be better. Please, keep it going indefinitely!’
Claudia, Portugal
‘Many thanks for this. Wonderful. I’m Catholic, but find it difficult to find a daily space like this provides for God. If you keep this up I’m definitely going to get an MP3 player. It’s not really always easy to carry a bible around - to be honest, it’s not really ‘easy’ - I’m not really sure that it is, but this is just right. Genuine space for time with God.’
