ST AGNES MEDICAL CENTRE OUTREACH MARKS 10 YEARS OF SERVICE by Francis Moniram
Our Medical outreach programme began in a very small way in the summer of 1993. We saw the needs of our brothers and sisters, especially the Amerindians in the lake areas and the Pomeroon River. We didn’t have the necessary funds to purchase the much-needed drugs and, as you know, drugs can be very expensive. We prayed and hoped that one day we could do something.

In a way our prayers were answered in the form of Tony Montfort, Director of Jesuit Missions. He was visiting Guyana at the time and I was lucky enough to meet him at Brickdam Presbytery. I told him of our plans and he agreed to see what help he could offer.

When he returned to the UK he sent us a generous grant. We were now able to purchase some of the necessary medicines. That started us off and we would go with the local parish priest to the different mission stations whenever we had drugs.

A daily clinic was also started here in Perth where people could have their blood pressure and sugar checked. Those who live at a distance have painkillers, cough syrups and fever mixtures.

It is thanks to our generous benefactors - not the least the readers of Jesuits and Friends - that we have lasted for 10 years and we go from strength to strength.
We wish you all a holy and peaceful Christmas.
